Particle fluctuations in nonuniform and trapped Bose gases

The problem of particle fluctuations in arbitrary nonuniform systems with BoseEinstein condensate is considered. This includes the case of trapped Bose atoms. It is shown that the correct description of particle fluctuations for any nonuniform system of interacting atoms always results in thermodynamically normal fluctuations.

Dilute Fermi and Bose Gases

We give a unified perspective on the properties of a variety of quantum liquids using the theory of quantum phase transitions. A central role is played by a zero density quantum critical point which is argued to control the properties of the dilute gas. An exact renormalization group analysis of such quantum critical points leads to a computation of the universal properties of the dilute Bose g...

Suppressed fluctuations in Fermi gases

Suppose you have a large volume of an ordinary gas and you examined a small subvolume within it that contains a mean number of particles N. You would expect that the variance of that number, δN2, resulting from repeated measurements, is also equal to N. By “ordinary,” I mean two things. First, the gas is ideal, i.e., composed of particles with negligible interactions, and second, the gas is “cl...

Experiments with Degenerate Bose and Fermi Gases

Two sets of studies are described in this thesis. In the first set, an atom interferometry technique was developed for the measurement of the fine structure constant using a BoseEinstein Condensate. In the second set, degenerate Fermi gases were prepared and their properties explored in a regime of strong interactions. We have developed an atom interferometer which is capable of measuring with ...

Fermi-Bose mapping for one-dimensional Bose gases

One-dimensional Bose gases are considered, interacting either through the hardcore potentials or through the contact delta potentials. Interest in these gases gained momentum because of the recent experimental realization of quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases in traps with tightly confined radial motion, achieving the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) regime of strongly interacting atoms. For such gases the F...
